Anti-Piracy Breakthrough for Dolby Digital Cinema
Untitled Document After many months of testing and analysis by independent laboratories, I’m pleased to let you know that the Dolby Digital Cinema system has been recommended for FIPS Level 3 security certification. FIPS Level 3 certification is a DCI requirement for digital cinema servers, ensuring the highest level of anti-piracy protection for the digital movie as it is processed inside the unit. In fact, due to the specialist design and manufacturing methods required, FIPS Level 3 is one of the toughest DCI requirements for server manufacturers to meet. To my knowledge, no other server manufacturer has yet announced this level of compliance.

FIPS certification is awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technologies after an approved independent laboratory has performed extensive analysis of the design and construction of the unit. This includes attempts to physically break into the unit and steal the information inside. We’re very pleased that InfoGard, a NIST-approved lab, has completed its analysis of the Dolby Digital Cinema system and has found that it meets the criteria for FIPS Level 3. Meanwhile, work is continuing on the forthcoming Dolby 3D Digital Cinema system, enabling fantastic digital 3D with a regular white screen. We were delighted with the reaction to our sneak previews at ShoWest, and look forward to doing our first European demonstrations at CinemaExpo.

Notable recent projects featuring the Dolby Digital Cinema system include the German premiere of Meet The Robinsons at the Mathaeser cinema in Munich, a VIP screening of Luc Besson’s Arthur and the Invisibles in a specially-constructed 500 seat cinema at the Ferrari factory in Italy, and 3D installations on large screens in Australia and New Zealand using dual DLP Cinema projectors.
